Chipmusic, also known as 8-bit music, is the first
musical genre born and bred on the Internet. From Beijing to
Los Angeles, passing through Stockholm, Paris, London and
Brussels, the impact of 8-bit communities continues to expand.
These underground musicians reject high technology, and for
principally artistic and economical reasons, along with a
touch of romanticism, prefer the visual and sound qualities of
"low tech".
At the heart of chipmusic is the computer chip, which
opens the door to all kinds of musical meanderings. 8-bit
musicians track down early video game machines (Atari, GameBoy
1st generation, Commodore 64) and turn their basic raw tones
into music that is rougher around the edges, more
unpredictable, but also more human than that ruled by
sophisticated digital technology.
8-BIT GENERATION will lead us into this improbable
musical world … Whether performing live, transforming obsolete
toys and video game machines, remixing rock and pop music into
chiptunes, or converting one of punk rock’s founding fathers
to 8-bit music, these musicians of the Nintendo generation
have created a totally underground but impeccably organized
network. The film tells the story of this movement. It also
reveals the impact of video game culture on a whole generation
of artists, demonstrating how the sounds, graphics and imagery
of these early games have become an incontestable part of
today's popular culture.
